Dream Valley Farm

A family raising sable and nubian goats

Yogurt anyone?

We that feeding yogurt to the animals, especially the goats, is just as beneficial as feeding them the expensive probiotics that are available out there.  They love the fruity flavors.  Nettie’s favorite is the chobani honey ‘nilla.  She gobbles it right up!

We now feed it to the dogs, cats and chickens as well.  The benefits are many and comparable to what it does for humans.

Many goatie blessings.

Goatie Blessings…

The nominations for the “blessing nanny” are finally rolling in.  We are very happy about this.  We find our goats have been such a blessing to us in many ways.  Most importantly, bringing our family together with a common goal and bonding us with their love as well as ours.

Our views on self-sufficiency have strengthened.  The more we learn about what is in our food sources via the public market, the more we wish to provide for ourselves and our loved ones.

Many, many blessings to you all.

Add on Craigslist

For all of those who are wondering about the add on Craigslist please see the goat contest page for details.  I had to list the add as “free nanny goat” as craigslist will not allow me to post the contest.

The nanny will most likely be a sable doe as I do not have enough nubians to consider this.  We have some fabulous girls to choose from.  This is a wonderful opportunity for a 4-her or someone who isn’t quite sure they want to own a dairy goat.  If you think a milking goat will be a blessing to you, please make your nomination.  Don’t forget to include your personal information such as name, address and a number or email where you can be reached.  Last year a little girl from Dansville, NY received her blessing nanny.  She has returned to our farm this past december for breeding and kidding.

It’s cold outside!

Winter is definitely here.  All I can say is cleaning water buckets is not fun in this weather.

Keep warm everyone.

Business License

Our farm will be official this year.  We are getting an agricultural business license and keeping good records.  Of course this will require me to get a new computer as the family computer is shot.  Shhh, I am using “daddy’s work computer”!

Also, during the year I will be taking business courses on writing a business plan, quick books and other related farm topics.  I love this farm and have so many things we would like to get accomplished.

We have put a deposit down on two boer does and a boer buckling.  They will be joining our herd in June I believe.  They come weaned which is a great help.  Dairy does come as bottle babies.

The weather is terrible so the boys have been taking care of the farm.  I miss the warm weather and sitting with my goats for hours just watching them play.

Goatie blessings. Kelly

Expecting grandbaby

Our son Dustin is expecting his first child and our first grandbaby in mid June.  Yesterday we all attended the ultrasound and the verdict is it is a GIRL!   Since we have all boys in the family you can imagine our excitement.  I can’t wait to meet her.

They have chosen the name Dixie Marie for her.  Not sure about the last name yet, as they are not married and do not intend on getting married.

It’s official…

John and I are now official members of the  Mid York Beekeeping Club.  We had our first meeting yesterday and plan to start purchasing equipment in February.  This club is a wealth of information and resources.

We look forward to establishing our own bee colony.   I will post products available for sale as we acquire them.  Most items will not be from our own colony for at least another year.

We plan on making fabulous goat milk and honey soap, lip balm, and lotions as well as beeswax candles.  In a year or two we may have enough honey to offer it for sale.

I also plan on attaching a paypal account to this site in the future for ease of payment.

Bee good!

All is well…

Everything is going as planned here on the farm.  John and I are excited about starting a colony of bees this year.  We start classes on Monday.  Hope the weather will be good.  It’s snowing like the dickens right now!

Many blessings to all.

Pregnancy confirmations…

The vet just left and we were pleased with the results.  A few girls didn’t “pass the test”…but they were young stock.  Rebreeding will take place this month.  We will update the results as they are bred.  Thanks goes out to our vet, Doc Stacey with Cherry Valley vets for all of the great goat care we receive from her.

Recommended reading…

An author named Joel Salatin has produced a wonderful set of books regarding what we as a society regard as normal when it comes to our food and how it is “allowed” to be produced.

One of the selections we read is called “Folks, this ain’t normal”.  This book discusses everything from how your food is raised to what you are “allowed” to do in regards to raising your children, and the “work” that they are “required” to do on the family farm.

All of our does are ready for their vet visit tomorrow to confirm their pregnancies.  Everyone is looking good and healthy.

More tomorrow.
